QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, Md. — A mother and son are dead following a mobile home fire in Queen Anne's County Wednesday.
Just before 2pm a bus driver passing by discovered flames coming from the double-wide home on Fox Meadow Road.
Inside firefighters located the bodies of Margarete Brown, 83, and her son Larry Brown, 63.
Family members told investigators the victims replaced an old kerosene heating unit the previous day.
The fire marshal found seven kerosene heaters among the debris. It's unclear how many were in use when flames broke out.
"Our hearts break for the families affected by this tragedy," said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray. "While the cause of this fire remains under investigation, tragedies like this remind us of the importance of fire safety, especially during the winter when the risks increase. I ask everyone to remain vigilant as we light our homes to stay warm. Please check your smoke alarms, have an exit plan and practice it, and get out, stay out."
